I refer to the letter Secularism not always a guarantee .

In a desperate attempt to add some validity to the articles point, the writer casually states: 'Turkey continues to occupy the sovereign country of Cyprus in violation of the will of the international community'.

Perhaps the writer may want to spend some time researching the pivotal role of Archbishop Makarios in the troubles that Cyprus experienced from 1963 to 1974 before attempting to argue that the occupation there happened despite secularism.

Either that or the role of the Cypriot Greek Orthodox Church in the successful campaign for a rejection of the 2004 UN peace plan. Accordingly, the 'will' of the international community is a rising chorus call for the isolation of northern Cyprus to be ended.

The author should also be aware that there would be no sovereign country of Cyprus had Turkey not exercised its right under the Treaty of Guarantee to intervene during a Athens-backed coup.
