The Perak PAS Muslimat (women’s wing) Council has registered its objection to a cabinet decision that minors must be brought up in their original faith, if a parent converts to Islam.

indra gandhi 170409 03 In a resolution passed during its 46th annual meeting in Taiping yesterday, the council urged that the revocation of the directive , issued last month following a complaint by M Indira Gandhi (right) .

The 300 Muslimat members supported the stand that children of a parent who becomes a Muslim must follow the Islamic faith.

Former Muslimat council vice-president Amizan Baharudin told Malaysiakini : “The council’s resolution requests the federal government to allow children of converted parents to follow the Islamic faith as stated in the Quran.

“We will be sending a memorandum to (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohd) Nazri (Abdul Aziz) to revoke the cabinet.”

Two other resolutions passed at the meeting urged:

• Prime Minister Najib Abul Razak to dissolve the Perak legislative assembly and allow fresh state elections so that the people can choose their government; and

• The Information Ministry to remove all entertainment programmes on television that pollute the minds of children, as this contributes to social ills.

najib and perak state 140509 “The council will soon write to Najib urging him to dissolve Perak state assembly and allow the people to determine the political course of the state,” said Amizan.

Asked what the council would do if its requests are dismissed, she said: “We have faith in Allah and will turn to him for guidance if man fails us in our expectations.”

Council elections held yesterday saw most of the incumbents retaining their seats.

In the contest for vice-president, Parit branch head Dr Najihala Ahmad replaced Amizam, who also helms the party’s election machinery in Perak.

“I want to concentrate on the state election machinery and allow someone younger to take my place as vice-president,” she added.
