11.22am: Returning officer Abdul Wahab Samsuddin announces that the Bagan Pinang by-election will be a straight fight between Mohd Isa Samad (Umno) and Zulkefly Mohd Omar (PAS).

Independent candidate Shahruddin Abdul Hamid has failed to submit his nomination papers after being told that his proposer was not a local Bagan Pinang resident.

11.18am: While waiting for the official announcement of the candidates, the backlanes at the nomination centre have turned into a weekend market. There are about 50 stalls selling food and beverages, clothes and even perfume.

11.10am: After chanting non-stop since 9am, the Pakatan crowd takes a break from taunting a thinning BN crowd and perform the Mexican wave the times.

11am: Objection period ends . Everyone awaits the returning officer to announce the candidates for the Oct 11 Bagan Pinang by-election. The two who have filed their nomination papers are Mohd Isa Samad (Umno) and Zulkefly Mohd Omar (PAS).

10.20am: Objection period will end at 11am. It is believed that independent candidate Shahruddin Abdul Hamid has failed to file his nomination papers.

Both BN and Pakatan supporters continue to mill outside the nomination centre. The opposition crowd is training sights on Umno candidate Isa Samad. They shout "Tangkap ISA", "Umno

Rasuah" and waving money bills at Umno supporters.

10am: NOMI NATION CLOSES

Election Commission returning officer announces through a loudspeaker that nominations have come to a close and that members of the public have one hour to file their objections. However, no one appears to be listening.

It is not clear whether independent candidate Shahruddin Abdul Hamid is able to file his nomination papers in time. He had earlier left the centre to look for a local person to be his seconder.

The Pakatan crowd screams at the police for action but is met with a blank stare. Members of PAS security unit move in to form a barricade.

Pakatan leaders including PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali, ousted Perak speaker V Sivakumar and Parti Socialis Malaysia's S Arutchelvan take turns to address the opposition crowd.

Among them are supporters dressed in Hindraf colour of bright orange.

PAS leader Hadi Awang, along with other Pakatan luminaries including Khalid Ibrahim and Dr Hatta Ramli, walk over to the tent and shake hand with Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Negeri Sembilan MB Mohd Hassan.

He adds that the majority in 2008 general election was 2,000 plus votes, so it is not impossible for the opposition party to win the contest. However, he concedes that Bagan Pinang will be a tough fight for PAS, but he is confident of victory.

9.25am: Independent candidate Shahruddin Abdul Hamid is seen leaving nomination centre after being told that his seconder on his forms is not from the Bagan Pinang state constituency. He has gone to look for a local person to sign his forms before 10am.

Meanwhile, the third candidate, Shahruddin Abdul Hamid ( right ), has arrived alone at the nomination centre.

9.16am: Both BN and Pakatan supporters, many of whom soaked by the rain earlier this morning, have moved closer to one another and are now separated by a short distance.

The two sides continue to taunt one another. The BN supporters shout "Hidup BN" and sing "Inilah Barisan Kita", while Pakatan supporters shout "Rasuah", "Hidup Rakyat" and "Hancur BN".

9am: The two main candidates - Mohd Isa Samad (Umno) and Zulkefly Mohd Omar (PAS) - have both gone inside PD Municipal Council Hall to hand over their nomination papers to the Election Commission returning officer.

8.55am: BN supporters arrive at the nomination centre. They are allowed to march all the way to Municipal Council (MPPD) gates. The mostly PAS crowd however is kept apart about 100m away. Both sides shout and taunt each other.

bagan pinang by-election nomination 031009 bn supporters 06 8.50am: About 5,000 Pakatan supporters are milling outside the nomination centre at the Port Dickson Municipal Hall. Pakatan leaders including Haron Din and Dr Hatta Ramli (PAS), Syed Husin Ali (PKR) are seen going into the hall.

8.45am: The BN crowd, estimated at around 3,000, begins moving to the nomination centre about one kilometre away. The rain has stopped, but a lot of people are soaked.

8.30am: It begins to pour in PD. BN supporters, who are drenched by rain, have yet move to the nomination centre. Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin arrives with Umno candidate Isa Samad.

Meanwhile, Pakatan supporters have arrived at the nomination centre at PD Municipal Council.

Some supporters wear T-shirts with "Tak Nak ISA" emblazoned on them. They are apparently referring to BN candidate Mohd Isa Samad.

The crowd is controlled by the purple-clad PAS security unit and supporters walk pass an housing area on their way to the nomination centre.

Police have organised two different gathering points for both Pakatan and BN supporters and they are using different routes to get the the nomination centre to ensure that no clashes between the two rival groups.

He is immediately surrounded and booed by the crowd in front of Sekolah Menegah Datuk Haji Abdul Samad - the designated gathering point for Pakatan Rakyat supporters.

8am: Dark clouds have shrouded Port Dickson since dawn and with intermittent light rain. However, the BN crowd, which has gathered near the nomination centre, appears enthusiastic.

The crowd, estimated at 1,000 but growing, has gathered in a field next to the PD Land and District Office.

The Bagan Pinang state seat by-election is expected to see a three-cornered fight among former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar Mohd Isa Samad , who is also former Umno vice-president, PAS

Negeri Sembilan state chief Zulkefly Mohd Omar and an independent, former local PKR committee member Shahruddin Abdul Hamid .
