Information Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim today reminded the Malays that the Umno constitution already has principles of the 1Malaysia Concept.

rais yatim pc 070809 02 He said that under Clause 3 (6) of the constitution, the need for close relations and cooperation between the races was clearly stated.

"Coincidentally, under Clause 3 (6) of the constitution, it is clearly stated that close relations, cooperation with all the races and the creation of a single Malaysian race that is strong is necessary," he told reporters after opening the Tanjong Karang Umno division meeting in Selangor.

Also present was Tanjong Karang Umno division head Noh Omar, who is also the Minister of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry.

Rais, who is also a member of the Umno Supreme Council, called on party members to be courageous in voicing their views based on concrete facts.

"We are not saying the (Umno) voice is no longer heard but what is important is for us to voice out the Malay rights based on the Umno constitution itself and the 1Malaysia Concept," he said.

Earlier in his speech, Rais drew the attention of the delegates and observers that the federal constitution also contained clauses that protected the interests of all races.

He said the interests of all races meant that Malaysians of all ethnic groups could live harmoniously in line with the vision and mission of the 1Malaysia Concept.
