Former PKR Federal Territories chief Zaid Ibrahim has officially stated that he intends to quit the party. 

"It is true that I will be quitting the party but I have yet to submit my formal resignation from the party," wrote Zaid on his blog this afternoon.

He said that "all will be clarified" when he issues a written statement this Friday.

Last Monday, Zaid withdrew from the race for the PKR deputy presidency and quit all party posts, citing "malpractices and electoral fraud" was at play.

Zaid accused the party leadership for failing to address this and blamed party de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim and deputy presidency hopeful Azmin Ali as the source of inertia.

His critics claim that he has yet to provide any concrete evidence of the alleged irregularities and was intentionally stirring dischord within the party ranks. 

Following his withdrawal, Zaid said he expected to be sacked and will form a new party, dubbed ' Keadilan Baru '. 

In his latest wave of attacks against the party leadership, Zaid gave interviews to Mingguan Malaysia , New Straits Times and Star over the past two days. 

For Mingguan Malaysia and New Straits Times , Zaid alluded that he was likely to be sacked and would form his new party . 

But for Star , Zaid said outright that he will quit. The report was covered on the daily's frontpage. 

Even Zaid's aides caught off guard

Earlier today, sources close to Zaid denied Star's report stating that he was throwing in the towel.

Contacted this morning, the source said Zaid will issue a clarification on his blog later today.

Zaid is currently abroad and could not be reached for comment.

azlan "Essentially, what he has been saying in all the interviews is that he thinks he'll be sacked by the party soon. So I think Star jumped the gun on this one,” said the source.

"His stand has been very consistent in the interviews he has given to other dailies and (news) portals. So no, it's not like the Star got the scoop here. But he'll issue a brief statement soon. He's not very happy about this (news report).”

The source said it is likely that Zaid was referring to withdrawing from the deputy presidential race, rather than to quitting the party.

However, Bernama reported that Zaid did not rule out the possibility when contacted.

"No, I've not quit (the party). But maybe not too far from now," he said in a text-message to the government-owned news agency.

According to the Star report, Zaid said he has decided to quit the party, having "had enough of recent turn of events” in it.

"I knew my days in the party were numbered because the leaders were relentlessly making personal attacks against me,” he is quoted as saying.

"I am quitting because I want to dissociate myself from liars and cheats. I do not want to be part of a group that propagates lies and does not have any qualms about cheating for as long as the end justifies the means.”

Zaid joined PKR in June last year after being sacked from Umno.
