1Malaysia dinner to derail Pakatan mega-ceramah
With the distribution of goodie bags in Tenang over, the mysterious 1Malaysia NGO and other pro-BN groups are now apparently on a mission to divert the crowd away from Pakatan Rakyat's mega-ceramah in the last leg of their campaign.
The tactic includes a free extravagant dinner spiced up with an attractive performance as well as a lucky draw.
The opposition, meanwhile, is offering a dinner ceramah featuring
all heavyweight leaders, including PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang abd PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat tomorrow night at a Chinese restaurant.
The dinner titled "
Jom Ubah, Selamatkan Malaysia
" (Let's change to save Malaysia) is set to be the largest of its dinners organised in Tenang since nomination with more than 1,000 people expected to attend.
Those aspiring to attend the function need to buy a RM20 voucher to secure a seat.
Undermining Pakatan dinner target
However, Pakatan may miss its target as another concert dinner will be held just 600 metres away at Dataran Labis, by Pekan Labis village security and development committee (JKKK) and other local Chinese NGOs.
The 1Malaysia Chinese New Year Night Gala, backed by RTM and national mandarin radio station AiFM, will feature several local artistes and deejays from the radio station.
According to the event banners fluttering around Labis town, MCA president Chua Soi Lek, MCA Labis MP Chua Tee Yong and Johor exco member Tan Kok Hong will be the VIPs.
The concert will also hand out laptops, mobile phones and hampers in its lucky draw.
Similarly, Pakatan's grand finale ceramah on Saturday night will also be affected by another dinner concert organised by the 1Malaysia NGO.
The opposition fraternity usually hold mega-ceramah on the night before polling day as a 'morale booster' for their supporters and to consolidate their ground.
Dangling the free dinner lure
However, the hot topic among Labis town folks now is the 500-table 1Malaysia dinner concert on the same night at SJK(C) Labis.
Since this morning, workers have been busy setting up tents and the stage outside the school hall to fit in 500 tables, which could accommodate up to 5,000 people.
"The dinner is free. Anyone can attend, whether you are Chinese, Malay or Indian," said a beaming mother who was waiting for her children outside the school gate.
Although the dinner programme is yet to be confirmed, it is believed singing and dancing and a lucky draw are indispensable ingredients to draw the crowd.
This is the same modus operandi adopted by the self-claimed non-partisan organisation at the Galas by-election last November.
The NGO organised a big dinner that clashed with Pakatan big ceramah to divert its crowd, resulting in crippling Pakatan's attempt to convey their message to voters.
The opposition has conceded that the various activities organised by the group had contributed to a marginal swing towards BN by the Chinese community in Galas.
No end to freebies
The group re-emerged in Tenang last Sunday in their fancy 1Malaysia trucks, recruiting locals as volunteers to distribute free goodies to residents here.
Meanwhile, at an Indian dinner that will be attended by MIC president G Palanivel and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin tonight at SJK(C) Labis, 2,000 goodie bags will be given out to those present.
Rows of goodies bags were placed outside of the school hall when
Malaysiakini
visited the dinner venue this afternoon.
According to a worker busy preparing the hall for tonight's event, they are sponsored by plantation giant Sime Darby which hires most of the Indian estate workers here.
He said that free dhoti and sari will be given to all men and women attending tonight's dinner.
Apart from clothes, the bag contains three packs of fruit juice and other food items.
