Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy trial continues today with the cross-examination of Dr Khairul Nizam Hassan, former head of HKL's Accident and Emergency Unit.

azlan Khairul Nizam, who now serves at Putrajaya Hospital, had conducted a physical examination of complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

On Monday, he testified that he took samples from Saiful's mouth as the latter had claimed he had been forced to perform oral sex .

Another HKL doctor, forensic pathologist Dr Siew Shueu Feng, had been quizzed on Monday over several inconsistencies in his statement and medical report.

After Khairul Nizam finished his testimony, chemist Dr Seah Lay Hong, the person who tested the DNA evidence from the case, was called to take the stand.

Today's hearing has attracted the attendance of a number of representatives from the foreign missions, including Canada and Ireland.

Also present are forensic expert Dr David Wells and DNA specialist Dr Brian McDonald, who have been engaged by the defence team.

8.38am: Lead defence lawyer Karpal Singh arrives in court. Already there are lawyer Sankara Nair along with the defence's two Australian specialists.

The prosecution team is already present, including Solicitor-General II Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden.

8.41am: Anwar arrives with wife and PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Also present is newly-appointed PKR vice-president N Surendran.

The court is half-full with about 50 people. More are expected to come.

8.43am: The trial starts, with KL High Court judge Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah presiding.

NONE 8.48am: Karpal Singh continues his cross-examination of Dr Khairul Nizam Hassan ( right ), former head of HKL’s Accident and Emergency Unit. 

Khairul Nizam tells the court that he has seen about 20 sodomy cases in his career.

Replying to Karpal, the witness says the police are usually stationed at the hospital's one-stop crisis centre.

He says DSP Jude Pereira was present during the medical examination to help monitor the handling of specimens.

8.57am: Khairul Nizam says he did not read the police report lodged by Saiful.

He cannot remember who had told him about the alleged victim being subjected to oral sex.

"It could be from the interview of the victim, but I cannot remember whether DSP Jude was the person who briefed us," he says.

Khairul Nizam agrees that oral sex is different from anal sex, which was the original complaint filed by Saiful.

9.04am: Dr Khairul Nizam says Saiful had, during the interview, said he had put up resistance during the sodomy.

"Saiful, according to the pro-forma form, states the perpetrator attempted to ejaculate," according to the doctor.

9.12am: Karpal notes that several important aspects in the medical pro-forma form such as rectal examination had not been filled.

Similarly on anal splinter examination, Saiful's medical history and the circumstances leading to the incident were not entered by the doctor.

The person tasked with task was Siew, says Dr Khairul Nizam.

NONE 9.17am: Anwar ( left ) is heard saying from the dock: "Ada banyak version."

9.19am: Karpal points out the pro-forma form only states "attempted sodomy" and "attempted oral sex".

Khairul Nizam agrees.

9.22am: Khairul Nizam maintains Saiful did not say 'attempted sodomy' or ' attempted oral sex' but the pro-forma form states otherwise.

9.25am: An argument between the prosecution and defence ensues.

Yusof objects to the line of questioning.

Karpal says if it was attempted sodomy, there there should not be any penetration.

9.37am: Sankara takes over the cross-examination. He shows Khairul Nizam a sample bottle taken which has signs of being tampered with.

9.42am: The defence ends its cross-examination of Khairul Nizam. DPP Nordin Hassan begins re-examination.

Khairul Nizam says the pro-forma was prepared by the forensic department and the document in question was filled up by Siew.

9.43am: Spotted in the public gallery are PKR supreme council member Latheefa Koya, along with former Hindraf leader and former ISA detainee R Kenghadaran.

9.46am: Answering Nordin, Khairul Nizam says he led the medical examination, and that he and the team interviewed Saiful.

"Saiful told us he was asked to perform oral sex. His main complaint was being sodomised by a well-known public figure. Saiful did not say ‘attempted’ oral sex or ‘attempted’ sodomy," says the doctor.

NONE 10.02am: The pro forma form is marked as a defence exhibit D28.

10.03am: Khairul Nizam is released. The next witness is chemist Dr Seah Lay Hong ( right ).

The court takes a brief recess.

10.56am: The hearing resumes with DPP Noorin Badaruddin questioning Seah.

However, there is a breakdown in electricity supply and the court stands down.

11am: The court adjourns until 2pm.

2.15pm: All parties are in court. There is electricity but no air conditioning. Certain parts of the court complex still do not have electricity.

2.29pm: After a meeting in chambers, it is decided that the case will be adjourned until 8.30am tomorrow as air conditioning is not functioning.

Sankara tells reporters that the court's recording system is also down, forcing the judge to decide on the postponement. Shortly afterwards, electricity supply comes on momentarily.
