The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will carry out a thorough internal investigation into the death of deputy director of Selangor Customs department Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed, said MACC Commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohamed.

"We will leave it to the police to investigate the cause of the death and MACC will give its full cooperation," he said in a statement today.

Ahmad Sarbani, 56, who was among 62 Customs officers of all ranks, detained in a major operation on April 1, was found dead outside the Kuala Lumpur MACC building in Jalan Cochrane here this morning.

Abu Kassim said the MACC would like to express its deepest condolence to Ahmad Sarbani's wife and family.

Meanwhile, Customs Department director-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Khalil Yusuf said the department would leave it to the police to conduct the investigation into the death of its officer Ahmad Sarbani.

"We will leave it to the authorities to carry out the investigation. We are sad that such an incident has happened and I have asked officers in the department to assist the family of the deceased.

Speaking of rumours that Customs officers in Port Klang had staged a boycott at 2.30pm today, Mohamed Khalil said severe action would be taken if such claims were true.

"I had asked my officers to go down to the ground and check the claims and according to my officers work in Port Klang was not disrupted but if it is true, we will not compromise," he said.

He added that since the MACC's major operation, a crisis management centre had been set up in Port Klang and headed by Selangor Customs director Aziz Yaakub, to ensure all processing involved in import and export was carried out smoothly.

"We have also deployed officers from the headquarters to assist operations in Port Klang," he said.
