The police have to complete their investigation into the sex video featuring a man purportedly resembling Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and identify the actor before the government moves to form a royal commission of inquiry.

"It was decided that we should allow the police to wrap up their investigation first," Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz told Malaysiakini after raising the matter at the weekly cabinet meeting today.

"It's not enough to just ascertain if the (video) is authentic or not. We also have to identify the person in the video," he said.

"We cannot jump the gun... otherwise it would seem like we are being (partisan)."

NONE If investigations were done in a botched manner, or if done hurriedly, it would reflect poorly on the state, Nazri ( right ) said.

Yesterday, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim had vehemently denied being the man in the video, who was seen in compromising position with a East Asian looking female.

Anwar, at a press conference had implied that an inquiry into the sex video to determine the identity of the personality would be a waste of time.

Asked about this, Mohamed Nazri said tongue-in-cheek:

"He (Anwar) already knows its him that is why what he says it's not important. But we want to know if it is definitely him".

Important to clear the air

The de facto law minister took another dig at Anwar, saying that the opposition leader with his sights on the prime ministership should think it is of vital importance to clear the air on his credibility first.

"He wants to be on the moral high ground. In his speeches he cites Quaranic verses. We don't do that, we don't make speeches on a high moral ground," said Mohamed Nazri.

He also ventured to hand Awar some advice by reminding him that a leader who wants to be seen as a "good person" it is imperative for him "not be involved in immoral activities".

Early this week, a two-minute clip of the 22-minute sex video was leaked onto You Tube, a video-sharing web portal.

The recording which was first showcased two weeks ago at the five-star rated Carcosa Negara by three individuals known as 'Datuk T'.

Businessman Shazryl Eskay Abdullah, former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Tamby Chik and Perkasa treasurer Shuib Lazim - had  later conceded that they were the 'Datuk Trio' behind the sex video  screening.
