The KL Sentral auxiliary police today detained 11 individuals - eight students and three media practitioners - after a press conference at the public transport hub at 10.30am.

However, despite the students dispersing as ordered, eight of them were arrested while leaving the station along with the three journalists.

“They arrested them after we had already dispersed. In fact, some of those arrested were about to get onto trains when they were called back and detained.

"All they said to those arrested is that they were detained for gathering,” said Solidarity Mahasiswa Malaysia spokeperson Ahmad Shukri Kamaruddin ( above ).

They 11 were then transported to the Jalan Travers police station.

NONE Those from the media - two journalists from online news portal KeadilanDaily and a cameraperson from TV Selangor - were later released at 12.50pm after having their statements recorded.

According to Ahmad Shukri, the eight students have not yet been charged with anything.

NONE “We have already informed (national human rights commission) Suhakam and Deputy Higher Education Minister Saifuddin Abdullah about the matter,” said Ahmad Shukri further, who added that the Jelajah Mahasiswa Selamatkan Rakyat campaign will continue as planned.

The journalists and cameraperson were covering a press conference by the students from the SMM who organised the programme.

The program was to see student journey from KL Sentral via train all the way to Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, to campaign against lewd politics.

'Tarnishing KL Sentral's image'

NONE Bernama later reported that a total of only seven - including the three journalists - were arrested in this morning's incident following the SMM group's press conference to highlight their "Undergraduates Save the People Expedition" campaign.

Brickfields police chief ACP Wan Bari Wan Abdul Khalid said the seven were arrested after they ignored the order from the auxiliary police at KL Sentral to disperse in the 10.30am incident.

"Police arrested them because they held a gathering without a permit at the station and it could tarnish the image of KL Sentral, a place with a high concentration of tourists," he said when contacted.

Those arrested had their statements to taken and are being investigated under Section 27 (5) of the Police Act.
