The government allocated more than RM752 million for running national service (NS) training camps, surpassing its pledge to cap spending at RM500 million, accused an opposition MP today.

NONE Anthony Loke (DAP-Rasah) ( third from right in photo ) said that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who was the defence minister during the introduction of the programme in 2003, had announced that not more than RM500 million would be spent.

National service training is required for youths who have completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination as a way to foster friendships between different races and ethnic groups.

Referring to a written reply on the matter, Loke chided the government for paying such an "exorbitant" amount for a "failed initiative".

Loke had asked the Defence Ministry to detail the expenses of the camps and any potential review of the programme.

According to the reply, the ministry had approved a total of RM752,922,000 for the programme.

The breakdown is as follows:

Emoluments - RM21,328,000

Services and supplies - RM723,893,530

Assets - RM6,220,000

Payments and fixed charges (including remuneration for civil servants) - RM1,480,470

Conduct an independent audit

"The programme was initiated to foster unity but it has failed to do so," claimed Loke.

"How can it be a success when there are people like Ibrahim Ali spawning," he asked, taking a swipe at the Malay rights group chief, who has been accused of fanning racial sentiments.

Loke urged that an independent audit be conducted by the parliamentary committee on the cost of the programme.

"We want to know how much was used for uniforms, food and its overall operations," he said, adding that the suggested audit panel should also check on the necessity of the programme.
