Outspoken DAP Jelutong MP is in the soup again, and this time faces party disciplinary action for publicly criticising a fellow member. 

The Penang DAP leadership appears to be annoyed with Ooi's demand for state exco member in-charge of housing Wong Hon Wai to resign for allegedly making "baseless claims" against him in the Chinese media.

NONE State DAP chief Chow Kon Yeow said Ooi ( right ) had "gone overboard and crossed the line of decency" when issuing the statement in the press against Wong recently.

Wong is state Town and Country Planning, Housing and Arts Committee chairperson.

In the media report, Wong had purportedly claimed that Ooi failed to submit supporting documents such as the court order for 178 evicted squatters who applied to buy low-cost houses in his constituency.

The court order, he said, was important to prove that the applicants were eligible for low-cost houses.

Ooi had been miffed by the report, accusing Wong of sending him an official letter dated July 21 without mentioning the court order.

He lamented that he felt "insulted" and wanted to label Wong as a "little Napoleon", a term often used by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to describe uncooperative civil servants.

Party channels for issues ignored

Chow, who is also a state exco, said according to party policy, which members and leaders are often reminded of, internal channels should be used to resolve any misunderstanding or problems.

"However, Ooi has chosen to ignore this instruction. After this latest round of public attacks, the party cannot stop members from initiating disciplinary complaints against him," warned the Tanjong MP.

NONE Chow, who is also Padang Kota assemblyperson, said Ooi had claimed that Wong ( left ), who is Air Itam assemblyperson, has attacked him through the media, but fails to look at himself in the mirror.

He added that on numerous occasions, Ooi had used media channels to openly lambast party leaders.

He pointed out that at his press conference yesterday, Ooi appeared to target the chief minister and the Penang government.

He stressed that DAP elected representatives meet for discussions on a weekly basis.

"If MPs and state reps failed to raise issues at the meeting but instead seek sensationalism in the media, I would suggest to the CM there is no longer need for such consultation platforms any more.

"On further action, I will leave it to the party to decide and resolve this matter. As for comments made against the CM, I will leave it to the CM to respond," he said.

When asked, Ooi declined to respond to Chow’s statement, saying the latter is entitled to his own opinion.

Ooi said his main concern is “chronic squatter and housing problems” which make the state government look “inefficient and inadequate”.

“I want these questions fixed quick and fast before the general election as it is hurting DAP’s winning chances in Jelutong, if the state government continue to have a careless ( tidak apa ) attitude towards the housing issue here,” he told Malaysiakini .
