The Penang Umno liaison committee today urged Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng to withdraw his statement allegedly turning the splashing of paint at the Penang DAP headquarters into a racial issue.     

Its chairman, Zainal Abidin Osman, said Lim’s statement implied that the paint was splashed by Muslims.   

“As a chief minister, he shouldn’t say something like that without proof, let alone link the crime to a sensitive religious issue,” he told Bernama.   

Yesterday, news portal Malaysiakini.com reported Lim as saying that the splashing of paint last Sunday was probably linked to the controversy over the Penang Fatwa Council’s decision to ban the use of loudspeakers for the recital of Quranic verses before the dawn prayers.  

Earlier today, a fire, believed to be arson, broke out at the DAP headquarters in Penang, damaging the party’s signboard and main door.
