'Performance now', but polls reforms can wait

Reforms, then polls or face backlash, warns Bersih

Anonymous_4031: Electoral reforms must take place first before the polls. Then, and only then, can we have an honest and fair election.

It looks like the parliamentary select committee (PSC) will take its time to recommend reforms; and the attorney-general may also take his time; and then after that, the cabinet may also take their time.

By then, the wayang (general election) will be over. What does it matter if there is a PSC or not?

If there is any sincerity in the words of the PM, then electoral reforms should have been in place by now. That will give meaning to his slogan ‘performance now'.

If ‘now' means six months to a year, then the word does not mean ‘now', but any time the speaker pleases. When words and actions do not match, we cannot trust the speaker.

AB Sulaiman: PM Najib Razak's recently announced that he wants our democracy to be the world's best, that his BN government should be prepared to admit to its mistakes, and that he is sensitive to the people's wishes.

All this can be taken and proven as sincere by him not calling for the elections before Bersih's reform demands are met. Otherwise it's all hogwash, or as the Malays would call it, 'hot, hot hen shit'.

Jimmy Ng : Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nazri Abdul Aziz thinks he is being very clever to come out and say that the next GE can be held before the PSC completes its work.

If the GE is held before the reforms, Bersih 3.0 will be ready.

2cts Worth: I think the reforms will not be ready before the GE is called. Much is at stake for the ruling party.

A loss for them will mean the majority of the Umnoputras will face a host of charges. You name it, they have done it. The jails will have to accommodate VIP prisoners and that will cost millions.

Armageddon: No way the electoral reform will be carried out before GE13 because BN will definitely lose the election.

All this talk about PSC is only a talk. BN is hoping that we will forget about it as time goes by. Malaysiakini should remind all readers regularly so that the spirit of Bersih 2.0 stays alive.

CM: Rais' remarks on Penang dangerous and false

Abasir: The more the Umno low life spew their venom at Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, the more he can be assured of the increasing support for him and his administration by all right-thinking Malaysians.

So let the certified half-wits do what they do best - rant and rave as they continue to undermine Najib.

Josephine: The attacks on Lim are relentless. Cheer up, Lim, this means you are doing a great job. You are public (BN) enemy No 1 as GE13 is coming close, and by hook or by crook, BN will try to bring you down.

FairPlay: Guan Eng, I think you are missing the big picture. First, who decides whether a comment made by a minister is dangerous?

Second, their strategy is to push you into the defensive. If two or three salvos are fired at you at regular intervals, how many press statements can you give?

Even if you can, would you still be the proper frame of mind, much less having to govern Penang?

Justice Pao: Not surprising, as Rais has always been known as the Minister of mis-Information.

Karma: Rais is trying to score some brownie points. Do remember that he was the one who first criticised Penang government for the alleged Christian conspiracy. It has not been proven until today.

Also please remember he wrote against the use of ISA in his doctoral thesis and later support ISA by claiming his thesis was for academic purposes only.

Also funnily, he claimed the ‘Undilah' video offended some people, yet he mentioned no one. So Rais is a man who likes to shoot but never need to prove anything at all because he is in BN.

Teoh family fails to get leave for judicial review

Lim Chong Leong: Why are we not surprised? Because everyone knows that the RCI (royal commission of inquiry) was convened to bring closure to the MACC (Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission) and Najib, and not for Teoh Beng Hock's family.

Needless to say, the powers-that-be do not want to reopen the case.

Victor Johan: Need we say more? Our legal system is there to suit the government of the day. We want the era of Salleh Abas back.

Only a change in the present government can bring about the change and the trust back to the independence of the Malaysian judicial system.

Loyal Malaysian: When it suits the Umnoputras, there's such a thing called legal precedence in our courts. But look at the unscrupulous and immoral power grab in Perak, all legal precedence has been thrown out of the window to justify their ends.

Ah Hoe : Teoh Beng Hock's death being classified as under unexplained (though "known") circumstances has not been the only case of death in custody - recall Ahmad Sarbaini Mohamad, A Kugan, Francis Udayappan, Alias Othman, and from January 2000 to December 2004, 80 other deaths in police custody (figure provided by Siti Norma Yaakob, the former chief judge).

Has anyone ever been found guilty?

SusahKes: And MCA chief Chua Soi Lek wants the Chinese votes back? Forget it; this alone is enough for me to keep my votes away from Umno.
