He said, however, historians were welcomed to correct mistakes, if there were any, and add new information uncovered as they could have occurred due to human factor.
The National Archives could provide assistance, including references, to historians who are keen on rewriting history books, he said when replying to a question from Salahuddin Ayub (PAS-Kubang Kerian) at the Dewan Rakyat today.
He said the department has a huge collection of interviews with leaders and notable figures from various backgrounds on the history of the country.
To a supplementary question from Salahudin, Salang said if the committee were to be formed, the opposition would say there was a political interference in writing history books.
“Hence, let us leave it to historians, researchers and intellectuals to rewrite our history,” he said.
To another supplementary question from Hamim Samuri (BN-Ledang), he said the ministry welcome those who wanted to conduct research to ensure that the country’s historical records were being updated continuously.
