Police have uploaded four video clips online to counter claims they had rough up demonstrators at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris in Tanjung Malim during their demonstration for academic freedom last Sunday.
The videos were posted on
YouTube
by user PDRMsia. Each video lasts between one and two-and-a-half minutes.
All four video clips begin with a statement saying, "To all Malaysians, do you want would-be leaders behaving like this? To parents, do you want to see your children being involved in such activities? To university students, do you want to destroy the future ahead of you by participating in such activities?"
The recording shows the behaviour of a group of students as the main gate into UPSI is closed the night of New Year's Eve.
A police officer is shown negotiating with a student leader for the gathering to disperse "within 15 minutes", but the students refuse to disperse.
The students are also seen making buntings, with the police continuing to shout in the background, ordering that they disperse.
However, the video stops here. Nothing is shown about what happened when the police moved in on the demonstrators.
It has been widely reported that 14 students were arrested and two were injured in a scuffle with the police in the early hours of Jan 1.
The arrests were made about 2.40am, about when Kumpulan Aktivis Independen Mahasiswa (Kami) president Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz lost consciousness in a scuffle with police while Gerakan Menuntut Kebebasan Akademik (Bebas) president Muhammad Safwan Anang was taken to hospital for injuries he suffered.
Safwan told reporters a day later that he was beaten up while helping an injured friend.
Lawyer Fadiah Nadwa Fikri in representing the students yesterday said they have evidence of alleged police brutality
