The Election Commission today asked opposition political parties to have confidence in the EC to study and implement improvements to the electoral process.

Its deputy chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said the EC is working towards improving the electoral process with the assistance of the parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reform.

He said the use of indelible ink is being considered to prevent a voter from voting more than once, and the EC is working with the National Registration Department to clean up the electoral rolls.

NONE Postal voting conducted by the EC is transparent and is observed by the agents of candidates, he added.

"What more do they (the opposition) want? Have confidence in the EC and be patient.

"We will fulfill our promise," he said when contacted by Bernama to comment on the statement by PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang yesterday that use of the indelible ink does not guarantee a free and transparent elections.

Abdul Hadi is reported to have said that a fair elections requires a total change, not only in the use of indelible ink but also in terms of the electoral rolls, press freedom, postal balloting and efficient management of elections.

A decision on the use of indelible ink in the next general election will be announced on Feb 1.

Asked about the category of early voters being extended to include nurses, doctors and journalists, Wan Ahmad said the matter is still under study.

"We have to consider various factors and the capability of the EC.

"However, we will find ways to accommodate those who are unable to vote on polling day.

"We cannot deny them their right," he said.
