Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said organisers for the Bersih 3 rally on April 28 must ensure that the event is conducted peacefully.

Speaking to reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Hishammuddin said organisers must abide to the newly passed Peaceful Assembly Act 2011.

"If they want to assembly, they must ensure that this is a peaceful assembly. For us, this is not a problem. But don't cause trouble on the streets," he said, according to a report on Sin Chew Daily's website.

However, Hishammuddin was non-committal on whether Dataran Merdeka can be used as a rally venue.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin also questioned rally organisers, the Bersih 2.0 coalition, on their motives.

He asked aloud why should the coalition demonstrate when seven out of eight of its demands have already been met.

Yesterday, Bersih 2.0 announced that the rally would be held in Dataran Merdeka to call for the following:

  • The resignation of the entire Election Commission.
  • The cleansing of the electoral process before the next general election.
  • International observers should be allowed to monitor the polls.
Bersih 2.0 said the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) on electoral reforms had failed on several fronts.

Among others, the coalition said the PSC had failed to ensure a comprehensive audit of the electoral roll, address problems with postal voting and recommend adequate measures to stop 'dirty politics'.
