Keadilan Youth said today that it will go to the police royal commission should the police fail to act on a report lodged by ex-deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim four years ago against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's alleged abuse of power.

The wing's deputy head, S Manikavasagam, told malaysiakini that he had lodged another report on the matter on behalf of the movement at the Dang Wangi police station in Kuala Lumpur at 1.30pm.

He said the lodging of the report was to mark the anniversary of 'Black 14', the day Anwar was sentenced to jail on corruption charges by the High Court five years ago today.

Manikavasagam said the report lodged was identical to the one made by Anwar on June 13, 2000 with regards to a statement made by former Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA) Shafie Yahya head at the Kuala Lumpur High Court during the former's corruption trial on June 12, 2000.

Anwar has served four years in jail on corruption charges and is currently awaiting the outcome of an appeal against another conviction for sodomy. The prison sentence for this conviction expires in 2009.

In his police report then, Anwar had stated that Shafie told the court that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had summoned him (Shafie) in June 1998 and scolded him for conducting raids on the Prime Minister's Department Economic Planning Unit (EPU) director's office, where a cash of RM100,000 was seized.

Shafie had also told the court that Mahathir instructed him to stop the investigation immediately.

In his report, Anwar had claimed that Shafie's statement showed an alleged abuse of power to shield a corrupt practice and to obstruct the cause of justice.

Release call

Anwar had called on the police and the ACA to launch an investigation into the matter under Ordinance 22 of the Emergency Act 1960 and Anti-Corruption Act 1997.

Manikavasagam said the police have so far failed to act on any of the police reports lodged by Anwar or Keadilan Youth in relation to Anwar's trial.

"This time around, we are giving them seven days to act, failing which we will submit all these reports to the Police Royal Commission in Putrajaya," he said.

Manikavasagam also called on the government to consider releasing Anwar as " ... even the prime minister has said that the Anwar issue in no longer relevant.

"As such, the government has no reason to fear him and they should release him to enable him to seek treatment for his spinal problem," he said.
