Several areas in Penang were reported to have experienced moderate haze with an air pollutant index (API) of between 65 and 76 today.

According to the website of the Department of Environment (DoE) today, the IPU reading for Seberang Jaya was 72 at 7am and rising to 76 at 11am with visibility of 7 kilometres.

The IPU reading in Perai was 66 at 7am and 70 at 11am, at USM (65) at 7am and 67 at 11am, with both areas recording visibility of six kilometres.

Meanwhile, state Health, Welfare and Environment Committee chairperson Phee Boon Poh, when contacted by Bernama , said the haze that had hit Penang for the past two days was due to open burning in several areas in the northern states.

An IPU reading of between 0 and 50 is good, 51-100 (moderate), 101-200 (unhealthy), 201-300 (very unhealthy) and above 301 is dangerous.
