Khalid keeps mum on state elections date
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has refused to reveal the date of the Selangor state elections, maintaining that he will not disclose their election strategy.
Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has refused to reveal the date of the Selangor state elections, maintaining that he will not disclose their election strategy.
"As Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will not announce the date for the 13th general election, neither will I reveal the state election date, for the same reasons," he said.
Speaking to reporters after a discussion over the state budget for 2013, Khalid said he will exercise his powers to call for elections when the timing is “most suitable” for the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
For now, Khalid said the lack of certainty regarding the timing of the general election made it very difficult to confirm any plans.
He said he did not expect the general election to be called in July or August, when Muslims have to undergo the fasting month of Ramadan, nor during the haj pilgrimage season in October.
Previously, Abdul Khalid had said that the Selangor state assembly will not be dissolved before June 2012 because his administration needed more time to carry out its 2012 Budget plans.
'Take BN’s handouts'
On speculations that Najib would announce an election budget on September 28, Khalid said Selangor Pakatan would not be aping BN.
“We should approach the budget as a professional event, and not only focus on it during the election,” he explained.
On the RM500 Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) handouts by the federal government, Khalid said Selangor will not follow suit and that BN was doling out cash too late.
“Giving away hand-outs such as vouchers and gifts at the last minute is an indication of poor governance.
“It shows bad planning and a misuse of funds from BN,” he said.
However, he also advised people to take the election gifts, because the giveaways were being funded with everyone’s tax money.
“You might as well take it because it is your own money that is being wasted, or you will end up losing your tax money twice,” he pointed out.
