The mother of Balik Pulau member of parliament Yusmadi Yusoff (left) lost about RM30,000 worth of jewellery and cash after her house at Jalan Baru in Balik Pulau was broken into by a masked man early this morning.
During the 4am incident, Fatimah Ahmad, 73, also sustained an injury on her left eye after she was punched by the robber who had entered the house while she was fast asleep.
Fatimah, who was staying alone, was awakened by the robber and ordered to surrender her valuables at knife-point.
“Thus, I immediately handed over my gold chain, bracelets and two rings worth about RM30,000 which I was wearing... from his accent, I believe he was a local (Penangite),” she told reporters.
Not satisfied with the jewellery, the robber also grabbed her handbag containing RM4,000 cash, before escaping.
She then called her son who lives nearby to seek treatment at the Balik Pulau Hospital and later lodged a police report.
Barat Daya police chief Supt Hatta Md Zin said a report was received at about 6.40am.
“We believe the suspect worked on his own and have long observed the victim’s movements,” he said, adding that heavy rain made it easier for the robber to break-in without being noticed by the neighbours.
