A meeting involving six government agencies on the status of Suaram, which has been accused of financial irregularities, has not decided on any course of action against the human rights

watchdog.

Companies Commission Malaysia (CCM) chief executive officer Mohd Naim Daruwish said the two-hour meeting merely touched on the jurisdiction of each agency involved after receiving feedbacks on CCM’s investigation into the matter.

“But if there is a breach of the law, action will be taken against Suaram and (its vehicle) Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd,” he told reporters after chairing the meeting in Kuala Lumpur today.

Five other agencies which attended the meeting were the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Bank Negara, Registrar of Societies (ROS), the police and Home Ministry.

Mohd Naim said the committee would meet in one or two weeks’ time to study whether there was a need to set up a taskforce to look into the issue comprehensively.

ROS will also lead a study on legal action to be instituted against unregistered organisations, including Suaram, he said, adding that Suaram would be investigated for not being a registered organisation while Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd for receiving funds from abroad.

“Suara Inisiatif is being investigated for its alleged link with Suaram, but CCM had limited jurisdiction under the Companies Act 1965,” he added.
