There will be no separate state and general elections despite the threat by the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat government to dissolve the state assembly earlier, says Election Commission chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof.

NONE Malay daily Sinar Harian today reported Aziz as saying that Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim will have to reconsider his statement on dissolving the state assembly earlier, since the Dewan Rakyat will automatically dissolve on April 28.

The Selangor state assembly will automatically dissolve on April 21, after having held its first sitting five years ago.

"Having separate elections will involve a bigger expenses and it will involve the same voters, officials and schools, resulting in a prolonged campaign period.

"I do not like to hold separate elections, as EC's record shows in the Batang Ai, Bukit Gantang and Bukit Selambau by-elections that these can be held together," the newspaper quotes Aziz as saying.

Khalid has announced that he may dissolve the state assembly after Chinese New Year, giving the picture this could possibly be done after Chap Goh Meh, the 15th day of the lunar new year.

However, Khalid later said he would first be meeting with Pakatan representatives this week, before deciding on the dissolution of the state assembly.
