The police have not given the green light to the organiser of Pakatan Rakyat rally to be held at Padang Kota Lama in George Town at 8pm tomorrow.

In fact, Timur Laut police chief ACP Gan Kong Meng said the organiser’s application was rejected as the venue chosen was a public area and it was feared that the rally, which is expected to be attended by over 50,000 people, would disturb public order and cause massive traffic congestion.

“Detailed explanation have been given to them, but they still insist on holding the event,” he told reporters in George Town today.

As such, he said traffic policemen would stationed at all junctions heading to Padang Kota Lama, including the entrance to the ferry terminal and Penang Bridge, while Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah would be totally closed to control traffic flow tomorrow.

Gan also warned that any vehicles found to be obstructing traffic would be towed away.

Last Saturday, the opposition pact had also organised an illegal rally in Batu Kawan to protest the results of the May 5 polls, which resulted in massive traffic congestion in the area from 6pm to 3am the following day.
