There is no sign of foul play involved in the death of engineer P Karuna Nithi, who died in police custody yesterday evening, says Negri Sembilan police chief Osman Salleh.

“The post-mortem report is not yet out so I can’t comment further. We have classified the case as sudden death. There is no foul play,” Astro Awani quoted Osman as saying this afternoon.

karuna death in custody According to Bernama later this evening, Osman urged the public not to spread rumours about Karuna's ( right ) death.

He said the police had observed the CCTV recordings and concluded that Karuna was not subjected to any form of assault during his detention.

He added that a coroner from the Seremban court had also inspected the body and found no signs of injuries.

"The post-mortem report from the Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar Seremban also found that there were no physical injuries on the deceased's body.

"However, the cause of death has yet to be determined," he said.

Karuna was arrested last Monday after he allegedly assaulted his wife.

He was charged last Friday under Section 324 of the Penal Code  for causing hurt by dangerous means.

According to former Kapar MP S Manikavasagam, who is helping Karuna's family, the deceased could not raise the RM4,000 needed for his bail, and his family members were supposed to post bail tomorrow.

But before they could do so, they were informed of Karuna's death last night.
