MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek has urged netizens to be careful so as to avoid being "manipulated" by those trying to "incite hate" in the country for political reasons.

Responding to the arrest of the woman who allegedly insulted the Agong on Facebook , Chua advised netizens to "think twice" before making postings so as to not land in hot water.

NONE He also cautioned netizens not to abuse their freedom of speech "as the Internet, although borderless, is not lawless and charges have been made against irresponsible users even in the United States".

"The netizens should not be manipulated by some unscrupulous parties to incite hate and disrupt the country's peace and harmony for their selfish personal and political gain," he noted.

Chua ( left ) said all Malaysians should remember that racial unity and religious harmony in the country should be protected, as it is not something which happened overnight.

"I would also like to stress that rights and privileges enshrined in the federal constitution should not be abused by the opposition to achieve their political aim," he added.

A woman had been detained by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) on Tuesday for the alleged offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

It is understood that the police are also asking four of the woman's friends to come forward to assist in their investigations.
