The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is applying to use the Mutual Legal Assistance Act (MLA) to get help from the French authorities in its probe into the Malaysian government purchase of the Scorpene submarines.

NONE According to PKR Subang MP R Sivarasa ( left ), this was explained to PKR MPs during their meeting with MACC officials in Kuala Lumpur today.

“(MACC’s) investigations are ongoing... However, to use the MLA they have to go through the attorney-general.

“He holds the door and decides if it’s open or shut,” he told reporters after the meeting.

Sivarasa said that the MLA was previously used by Hong Kong's anti-graft body to obtain information from Malaysian authorities on the case involving Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman.

He said the MACC also gave an update on the Scorpene case, Musa Aman case as well its investigations into alleged corruption by Sarawak Chief Minister Abdul Taib Mahmud.

However, MPs are not allowed to publicly disclose further details on the investigations informed to them by the MACC.

The meeting, initiated by PKR, was also attended by MACC chief commissioner Abu Kassim Omar and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, who had a private discussion prior to the meeting with the MPs and other MACC officials.
