Deputy inspector-general of police Bakri Zinin has declared the Ops Cantas operation of the police force a success, without divulging any numbers.

NONE “Ops Cantas has yielded results, violent crime is reducing,” Bakri ( right ) said at a press conference in Cyberjaya today.

He said the force would continue Ops Cantas indefinitely until “we are satisfied” that the force can “control the situation”.

“But I don’t have any numbers with me,” Bakri said.

He also did not divulge about the profiles of those arrested under the operation and when these individuals would be charged.

“The details we need to obtain from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). We will obtain the details from them,” Bakri said.

He said that the operation would go on until the public’s level of confidence in the police reaches a satisfactory height in believing that the police are capable of curbing violent crimes.

Ops Cantas was launched last week nationwide in a bid to counter the recent spate of shootings and other violent crimes.

“We can even see it in the media, with the number of reports that violent crime has reduced,” Bakri said.

The operation includes a crackdown on secret societies involved in illegal activities, and Bakri has backed Home Minister Abdul Zahid Hamidi’s decision to release the list of such secret societies and triad gangs to the public.

“For us, we support any good initiative that the government comes up with,” he said.

Last week, police shot dead five suspected armed criminals in Sungai Nibong, Penang.
