As more than 2,000 people had been detained under Ops Cantas, acting Selangor police chief A Thaiveegan has asked all gangster societies “to change their lifestyle”.

He said that the members of those gangster groups not only bring trouble to society but also to themselves.

NONE “We urge all these groups to change their way of living... If they are arrested, investigated and charged (in the court), will they be happy?” he told a press conference at a Hari Raya open house at the Selangor police contingent headquarters today.

Thaiveegan said that opportunities are everywhere for everyone to make their lives better in this country.

“If there are people who say that there are no opportunities, that is not true. We have the opportunity to go for education, training and working.

“If foreigners can come here to earn a living and become rich without getting involved in any crimes, why do you choose a way to become rich by breaking the law? So this is something which is unacceptable,” he said.

Ops Cantas was launched on Aug 17 nationwide in a bid to counter the recent spate of shootings and other violent crimes.

Yesterday, deputy inspector-general of police Mohd Bakri Zinin said that 2,247 people had been detained under the operation up until yesterday and seven guns, a hand grenade and 77 sharp weapons had been confiscated.
