Hadi: Use silat instead of bullets for 'small' thugs

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang believes that certain situations warranted the police to use bullets but when dealing with parang-wielding criminals, he advocates the use of silat instead.
In what appeared to be an agreement with Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s call for extrajudicial killings, he also stressed on the importance for the authorities to determine if an individual is a criminal before shooting the person.
According to the Marang MP, the "police can shoot but it depends on the situation."
"We have to know if he is a criminal or not. If he is armed with a parang only, many of our police know the martial art silat, that is sufficient.
"There are small and big criminals. The action to shoot must depend on the situation," he reiterated with a laugh during a press conference at the PAS headquarters.
The PAS president was responding to Ahmad Zahid’s controversial statement at an event in Malacca last week that the police should gun down suspected criminals.
However, Hadi refused to elaborate on the matter, saying he had not read about the matter nor was he aware of the question that was posed to Ahmad Zahid during the event.
Also present was PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali, vice-presidents Salahudin Ayub and Mahfuz Omar along with Anak Bukit state assemblyperson Amiruddin Hamzah.
Salahudin added that enforcement personnel must apply their standard operating procedure no matter how critical the situation before using their firearms.
"No matter what the issue, the federal constitution and the law cannot be ignored. We should correct our methods and approach. The ends cannot justify the means," he told reporters after the press conference.
