Selangor freezes pay hikes for MB, exco

Selangor has decided to freeze the pay increases for the menteri besar, exco, speaker and deputy speaker.
Exco member Ean Yong Hian Wah ( left ) was reported saying this today, adding that the pay rise for state assemblypersons will, however, remain as previously announced.
According to China Press , the freeze will continue until a review of the increments are completed.
However, members of the state government contacted by Malaysiakini remained tightlipped about the details.
One senior official on condition of anonymity confirmed the reports, telling Malaysiakini that it was the outcome of the administration's discussions several weeks ago.
The move comes after controversy broke out over the pay rise announced last November.
The decision was made in the state assembly, approving increments from 87 percent to 373 percent.
While the move sparked harsh criticism from various quarters, the state justified the decision as the last salary rise was in 2005 and the quantum then was not significant.
The state also has an excess of funds and it was noted that while the percentage of the hikes appeared high, the actual amounts were not unreasonable compared with present day salary scales.
While some from BN were vocal in condemning the move, it was noted that Selangor BN reps, too, voted for the increments.
