The Star Online has reported that Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar has filed for divorce, and it quotes  syariah court records on this.

The online version of the mainstream English daily reported that a check with the lower Syariah Court at Jalan Duta revealed that Nurul filed a divorce petition against her husband Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim late last month.

Nurul could not be immediately reached for comment.

But after news reports of her divorce were published online, Nurul simply replied, "Nope," to a tweet which asked her to verify the " fasakh " (application to dissolve the marriage).

According to The Star , the divorce application was filed in late December and Raja Ahmad is believed to have received the petition on Jan 16.

It also reported that the daughter of PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim declined to comment when contacted, saying it was a private matter.

Nurul, 33, and Raja Ahmad, 35, were married on May 9, 2003. The couple has a seven-year-old daughter and four-year-old son.

Raja Ahmad Shahrir is a research associate at Institut Rakyat, a think-tank affiliated with PKR.

At about 4.45p, Nurul Izzah's office issued a press release to appeal for privacy. Below is the statement in full:

"We are deeply saddened by the undignified intrusion into our private lives and will do our utmost to work out our continuing union.

"Our family is our priority, as is our time together.

"We thank all our supporters for their kind understanding, and appeal to all to accord us privacy.
