Election Commission chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof has warned PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim of action if he continues to campaign earlier than allowed for the Kajang by-election.

Berita Harian quoted Abdul Aziz ( left ) as saying that the police could take action under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

“Campaigning can only start from nomination day on March 11 and end by midnight on March 22,” Abdul Aziz is quoted as saying.

The daily also reported that six Kajang Umno branches have lodged police reports against Anwar for having starting his election campaign.

Branch leaders from Desa Sri Jenaris, Kantan Permai, Taming Impian, Saujana Impian, Prima Saujana and Saujana Damai lodged these reports, Berita Harian said.

Desa Sri Jenaris Umno branch head Nurazmin Mohd Zamry said the authorities should act because Anwar was flouting the law.

“Anwar openly campaigned at the Kampung Sungai Kantan community centre and this goes against the EC’s regulations and the Election Act,” Nurazmin told the Malay-language daily.

PKR’s Lee Chin Cheh vacated the state seat in a calculated move designed to propel Anwar into the Selangor government, to prepare Pakatan Rakyat to mount another bid to take Putrajaya in the next general election.
