M'sia tells global intel agencies to ignore 'leaks'

MH370 Malaysia has urged the international intelligence agencies not to buy into leaked information supposedly from the investigations into the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said this in response to a CNN report today quoting an unnamed US source confirming a communication tower in Penang had ‘picked up co-pilot Fariq Ab Hamid's (left) mobile phone’.

"For the international police and intelligence agencies, don't let such information (leaks) affect their own investigations," Hishammuddin told a press conference at the Defence Services Asia exhibition in Kuala Lumpur this morning.

CNN had claimed that the information had been obtained from Malaysia, via US authorities.

Hishammuddin refused to confirm the report, stating that he will not speculate on unverified information as the matter is under police investigation.

"This is to ensure the family members of those who are being investigated will not feel hurt," he said.

News of Fariq's mobile phone signal was first reported by New Straits Times last week, which described it as a "desperate call for help".

CNN reported today the signal was Fariq’s phone attempting to search for a service, but that there were no indications he had made a call.

Information Minister Shabery Cheek has also denied that Fariq had made a call on board the ill-fated flight, which is said to have "ended" in the Indian Ocean.

‘Malaysia wil reveal black box info’

Hishammuddin also played down any legal complications for the custody of the black box after he earlier revealed the attorney-general had gone to the United Kingdom to discuss the matter.

“Basically, on the issue of the attorney-general going to London, the question was  posed (to me) relating to the black box and I said I’m sure he will discuss it with some of his counterparts in London,” he said.

He added that it did not matter who had custody of the black box as long as the truth behind Flight MH370's loss is discovered and he also gave his assurance there would be no cover up.

“When you want to find out the truth, then definitely you have to reveal what is in the black box, so there is no issue of not revealing,” he said when asked if Malaysia would disclose the black box’s information in entirety if it gets custody of the device.

On a related matter, Hishammuddin said he was made aware of US lawyers harassing the family members of passengers on board Flight MH370 to solicit clients.

He urged family members to rely on the next-of-kin committee set up under the Foreign Ministry and gave his assurance to them that action would be taken against such lawyers anywhere in the world.

“The authorities in the country of origin can take action because everything has been linked up with the committee,” he said.
