PAS said it will persevere with its Hudud law proposal for Kelantan as that has been its fight since the 90s despite protest from its Pakatan Rakyat partners.

Party president Abdul Hadi Awang was reported by Sinar Harian as saying that the Islamic party has also signed no pact with PKR or DAP that could block Hudud from being enacted.

"This has been an issue since the 90s, even before Pakatan existed. So I do not see a problem for us to propose the Hudud law.

"We have been very consistent on this issue," he was quoted as telling reporters in Kuala Trengganu.

Earlier this month, Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaakob said that they were prepared to present a private member’s bill to amend the Syariah laws and Penal Code so that Hudud can be in place in Kelantan by 2015.

The federal government had in the past objected to such efforts by PAS but this time, minister in charge of Islamic affairs in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom was said to be more willing to go along if Parliament approves it.

On Monday, DAP Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng claimed that so far, a total of 50 parliamentarians would be opposing PAS' plan when it is put up for voting at the next Dewan Rakyat session in June.
