Mahathir, ask your billionaire sons to share wealth, too

YOURSAY ‘After all, they became super-rich in a short span of time.’

Dr M: 'Chinese' DAP doesn't like sharing

Geronimo: So what's wrong with practising meritocracy in a country where the best survive. I have children who are not scientists nor doctors or engineers, or even have an MBA degree.

So what? Life goes on. We explore alternatives and we become resilient.

Ex-PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad, by stating your point of view, you are once again telling the world how useless the Malays are - that they are not a competitive lot and need handouts. How wrong can you be.

I have lectured the best of Malay students, worked with the best of Malay bosses and have the best of Malay friends whom I can count on.

Your remarks are simply demoralising to the Malays and I hope they will ignore what you said and treat it as something insignificant from a senile old man.

Like they said, if you cannot lead, get out of the way and let others who can, do the job. As far as we are concerned, you are nothing but an obstacle to nation building, period.

Pemerhati: Mahathir as usual plays the racial card and uses the Chinese bogeyman to scare the majority Malays.

By doing so, he hopes the Malays will regard him and Umno as their champion, even though he is of Indian ancestry, and thus give Umno their electoral support.

He must be aware of the blatant lie about the Chinese dominating the economy as it is well known that Umno cronies, his sons and the Malay-controlled GLCs (government-linked companies) control the bulk of the banking, plantation, utility, oil and gas, transport, etc, sectors.

Moreover through his disastrous racist policies, he ethnically cleansed the public service which now is more than 90% Malay and a pale shadow of its previous efficient self.

The Chinese are mainly in the retail business and the Indians and Orang Asli have been truly screwed. The racial strategy served Mahathir well as he remained as PM for 22 years and is said to have stolen US$44 billion.

He now hopes that this same strategy will similarly benefit his children and continue to fool the Malays.

David Dass: All must accept that the needy of all races must be helped. All must accept that Malays must be given their fair share of opportunities and wealth. And all must believe that the Malays are as capable as the Chinese and Indians and given a level-playing field, they will be competitive.

The fact that so many Malays are in the civil service does not help. There was a time when many non-Malays were in the civil service. Diversity has a positive effect on productivity.

It also helps with perception - that Chinese and Indians are prepared to use their energy and talents for the good of the nation. It also helps Chinese and Indians and non-Malays generally to believe that they have a stake in the nation.

Non-Malays did not make the decision to do away with the English language or reduce standards in education. There are few non-Malays in the civil service, the education service, the police force, so they cannot be blamed for low standards and high crime rates.

Anonymous #33227154: What rubbish is this despot talking about? What evidence has he that Chinese control the economy and most Chinese can afford to send their children abroad?

As usual, he is spinning lies and expecting people to believe them. He has screwed our country for 22 years and still wants to continue to do so even to his grave.

Malaysia is for all Malaysians regardless of race and religion and we should enjoy its wealth together. Don't let this despot destroy our unity with his personal vengeance and hatred.

Dr Suresh Kumar: We know how much Mahathir shared the wealth of the country with Indian Malaysians.

He keeps accusing the Chinese of controlling the economy which is none of his business anyway because the Chinese have a natural inclination for business activities and they did it without waiting for alms from the Malays or the government.

The urban Indians, on the other hand, were largely civil servants and teachers in the old days, whereas the majority of the Indians were estate dwellers who laboured long hours in the rubber estates where hundreds of thousands of them died from diseases, famine and snake bites.

And this man is the one who displaced them mercilessly to favour his crony businessmen, many of them are indeed Chinese developers without proper compensation and today they make up the largest group of urban underclass of society mired in perpetual poverty and involved in criminal activities just to survive.

Anonymous #20513663: Mahathir is getting boring. This is the propaganda he helped to create, reinforce and propagate decades ago to divide and rule Malaysians.

(DAP are Chinese communists, except when they are secret agents from the Vatican with a Christian agenda, of course. And PAS are the masterminds behind al-Qaeda, except when they are courted by Umno for 'Muslim unity', of course.)

Malaysians have seen through these lies and moved on to a post-racial world. He's still stuck in the rut he made himself.

DAP is a social democratic party and a member of Socialist International. Redistribution and solidarity are part of its programme, but based on need and not based on invented, fluid and malleable 'race'.

Which part of 'socialist' and 'social democrat' does Mahathir not understand? We could say the 'Indians-turned-Malays' are not interested in sharing, but that would be descending to his level.

Anonymous_3e86: Is there anything wrong with meritocracy? Is it wrong to find the best people for the job? How is the country going to progress if we have people who can't deliver?

How is the country going to progress if everything is based on corruption, nepotism, cronyism and race? No wonder, Malaysia is now so far behind the likes of South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.

Swipenter: Mahathir, can you ask your billionaire sons to share some of their wealth with the poor Malaysians and not take so much from the country that they became super-rich in a short span of time without having anything par excellence to show.
