A total of 800 retailers under the Association of Muslim Wholesalers and Retailers Malaysia (Mawar) will boycott all products manufactured by Kraft Foods in retaliation against the Cadbury chocolate containing porcine DNA it produced.

Mawar spokesman Bazeer Ahmad ( right ) said today the action was prompted by the Health Ministry's tests that confirmed two Cadbury chocolate products were found to contain the pork strands, which are forbidden for Muslims.

Mawar and the Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) said they are angry as Kraft Foods Malaysia, the maker of the Cadbury chocolates, had been dishonest and violated the sensitivity not only of  Muslims but of all Malaysians.

Bazeer also said Mawar would monitor the premises of its members all over the country to esnure that they do not sell the products from Kraft Foods.

He then called on the people to lodge complaints if there are retailers selling these products.

'Stop selling Cadbury chocolates'

Bazeer also urged those who are selling the Cadbury chocolates to stop doing so until the matter is resolved by the government.

The authorities are still investigating whether or not Cadbury was aware that its products were contaminated.

The Health Ministry has confirmed that two chocolate products of Cadbury Confectionery (M) Sdn Bhd, the Cadbury Dairy Milk Hazelnut and Cadbury Dairy Milk Roast Almond, contained porcine DNA.

Following this, the Islamic Development Department ordered the withdrawal of the halal certification for the two products.

Meanwhile, PPIM activist, Sheikh Abd Kareem Sheikh Khadaied ( right ) said their action was based on the Food Act 1983 and the Food Regulation 1985, which allow producers to abide by the food standards and labelling to ensure the people know what they are consuming.

"We are in the process of monitoring the various premises. At present only 20 percent of the said Cadbury products have been withdrawn by retailers.

"Hence, we hope for the cooperation from Mawar to help monitor the withdrawal of these products,” Sheikh Abd Kareem said.
