PARLIAMENT The government is still “studying” a mechanism to solve interfaith custody battles, almost six year after promising in 2009 to amend three laws to make the law clear on the matter.

Despite forming a committee on the matter, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Jamil Khir Baharom said that the amendments were not pursued because they involved federal and also state government approvals.

He said so in a written answer to Gobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong) in Parliament last Wednesday regarding the government’s solution to the interfaith custody battles.

DAP’s Ipoh Barat MP M Kulasegaran, who is a lawyer for the interfaith custody battle involving Hindu mother M Indira Gandhi in Ipoh, expressed his disappointment that the government has not got things going for the past six year.

“The government is dragging its feet on this matter. How long more before a resolution is reached?” he said.

        

He also also said that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak “does not understand the hierarchy of the courts” for suggesting that such custody battles be resolved in the Federal Court.

“We are such a small country, and we have so much problems in making the law clear in this matter,” he said.
