Renowned rocker and actor Awie today claimed trial to the charge of intentionally causing hurt to his wife.

Awie, whose real name is Azhar Othman, 46, pleaded not guilty to the charge read out to him at the at the Ampang Magistrate's Court this morning.

He was charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years jail and a fine upon conviction.

He is alleged to have committed the offence on June 2 at Jalan UP 5B, Ukay Bestari, Taman Ukay Perdana in Ampang.

His wife, Rozana Misbun, 36, who is also the sister of actress Haliza Misbun, has three children with Awie.

Deputy public prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim had earlier submitted that bail be set at RM10,000.

However, Awie's counsel Hazman Harun pleaded for a lower bail.

In his mitigation, Hazman said Awie has been cooperating in the investigation and as a public figure, it is assured that he will attend court hearings.

Magistrate Ayuni Izzaty Sulaiman set bail at RM9,000 with two sureties and fixed Aug 11 for next mention.

Awie was last week detained as part of the investigations into the case.

His charge came in the heels of rumours of a bust up between Awie and his wife allegedly in front of a bank in Ampang recently.

The bruised and battered pictures of a woman, rumoured to be Rozana, were later widely circulated online.

However, the authenticity of the pictures have not been ascertained.
