Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) wants the government to sack PAS MP Mujahid Yusuf Rawa from the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) for dismissing the opinions of a former chief justice.

The Islamic rights NGO said Mujahid spoke too highly of himself by assuming he knows more than former chief justice Abdul Hamid Mohamad about the religious and harmony bills drawn up by the NUCC to replace the Sedition Act.

"For me, Tun Hamid ( left ) understands the issue a thousand times better.

"It is Mujahid himself who has failed to grasp the true meaning of the draft bills in saying that they do not clash with the Federal Constitution," Isma vice-president Muhammad Fauzi Asmuni said in a press statement published on Isma's website.

In a statement jointly issued with other members of the NUCC's committee on law and policy on Wednesday, Mujahid expressed disappointment with Hamid for calling NUCC a "Malay traitor" without fully understanding the council's proposals.

Hamid leads the National Unity Front (NUF), which was formed by Malay and Muslim NGOs, including the right wing Perkasa. The NUF calls itself an alternative body to the NUCC.

'NUCC out to undermine the rights of Malays'

Hamid had said that NUCC, which comprises liberal minds and opposition politicians, was out to undermine the rights of Malays, the royalty and Islam as enshrined in the constitution.

Isma's Muhammad Fauzi concurred and said anybody who didn't think so was either blind or part of the cohort, like the coalition of NGOs called Comango, which last year presented an alternative report on Malaysia's human rights abuses to the United Nations members in Geneva.

He also reiterated that Mujahid ( left ) and NUCC appeared to be short-circuiting the usual procedure and rushing through with the anti-bigotry bills .

"If this is his attitude, I think it is better for the government to drop Mujahid from NUCC.

"Either he is not able to understand the implication of his actions or he is out to redraw the country's entire concept and constitution. National unity outside of such set framework is surely only the cause of troublemakers out to ruin the country," Muhammad Fauzi  said.

NUCC has maintained that the focus of its anti-bigotry bills are very specific and meant to replace the Sedition Act 1948, and that the proposed bills do not challenge or overwrite any constitutional guarantee.
