PAS leader Khalid Samad says one should not invite the wrath of Allah in an attempt to avoid the anger of man.

In a Twitter posting in the wee hours of the morning, the vocal Shah Alam lawmaker used the word "kemurkaan" (which is the term used by rulers to express anger).

"The month of Ramadan is a month of piety (ketakwaan). Piety means being afraid of Allah's wrath.

"Do not invite the wrath of Allah just because one wants to avoid the wrath of man," he added.

Although Khalid did not specify who the tweet was intended for, it came in the wake of the Sultan of Selangor admonishing him for his remarks regarding the state Islamic religious council (Mais).

Quoting from an incident when the Prophet Muhammad received a stoning on his way back from Taif, Khalid noted that the prophet had prayed to Allah.

The prophet had also said he didn't mind even getting stoned, as long as Allah's wrath was not upon him.

However, according to an Utusan Malaysia report today, Khalid has accepted the sultan’s reprimand and requested with an audience with the ruler to iron out the Mais issue.

"I accept and will heed his highness' reprimand of me. I hope to have a meeting with his highness to hear his views and also give my own explanation," Khalid is quoted saying.

Zaid: Subject always wins

Meanwhile, also taking to social media, former law minister Zaid Ibrahim ( below ) expressed disagreement with the sultan for publicly reprimanding Khalid.

“Not good for monarch to reprimand Khalid publicly and get sucked in controversy.

“Let Mais and well-paid lawyers in government do the talking,” he posted on Twitter .

Zaid said when a public exchange occurs between a monarch and his subjects, it is the subjects who usually win.

“European history is quite clear on this. (The) monarch must respect the voice of people's representatives. Even if Khalid is wrong, let it be, government institutions will deal with him,” he added.

Last month, Khalid had called for Mais' powers to be checked after it instructed the Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) not to return over 300 copies of the Bible which it confiscated from the Bible Society of Malaysia (BSM) in January this year.

Pressure mounted after the Attorney-General's Chambers then noted that BSM had broken no law and urged Jais to do the necessary.

Khalid also then called on the Selangor government to revert to a pre-2012 practice , whereby the Selangor menteri besar had power to advise the sultan on the appointment of the head of Mais.

Yesterday, Sultan Sharafuddin said he was disappointed by the statement made by Khalid, calling the parliamentarian " insolent " and ignorant as to the role of Mais as the sultan’s adviser on Islamic affairs.

The sultan had also stressed that Mais respected the rights of non-Muslims and urged Khalid not to make anymore careless statements that could cause a stir among Muslims.

Khalid, however, had not made the statement on Mais alone, as he was accompanied by Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin, Kota Raja MP Siti Mariah Mahmud and Hulu Langat MP Che Rosli Che Mat.
