At least 21 graves were found vandalised at a Christian cemetery in Kampung Tunku in Petaling Jaya yesterday.

A check by Malaysiakini today showed many crosses broken and several tombstones crushed.

In his visit to the cemetery today, Kampung Tunku assemblyperson Lau Weng San also found that the Muslim surau opposite the Christian cemetery was broken into.

“The wooden door of the surau was forced open and all the items inside the surau were stolen,” said Lau, who visited the cemetery with his service team as well as Petaling Jaya City councillor Jeyaseelan Anthony.

Police were alerted to the incident by the cemetery supervisor who is attached to the Petaling Jaya City Council, The Star Online reported today.

District police chief ACP Azmi Abu Kassim said he was initially informed by one of the cemetery’s caretakers.

The incident is believed to have occurred in the wee hours of yesterday.

“Checks at the scene showed that the vandals had targeted the tombs at the new burial ground,” Azmi said, and confirmed that a police report has been lodged.

Most of the structures were believed to have been broken with a heavy tool, he added.

Meanwhile, Lau added that Jeyaseelan will check whether the contact details of the family members (of the deceased whose tombs were vandalised) can be recovered.

‘We were informed that the graveyard is a favourite spot for drug addicts.

“We will request the council to allocate more funds to tighten the security of the cemetery at night,” said the DAP assemblyperson.

The incident comes less than a year after a Christian cemetery in Kuantan was also similarly vandalised, in January.

The structures at that cemetery, too, were also reported to have been broken with the use of a heavy tool.
