The government must list all 85 items that will be exempted in the impending Goods and Services Tax (GST) with immediate effect so that the implementation of the new tax system is transparent, Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) said today.

Its propaganda director Eddy Noor Reduan said in a statement that the government's claim that GST will not cause excessive price hikes in goods is a "modern myth".

"This is following the government's failure to announce petrol and diesel in the GST exemption lists," he said.

"SAMM urges the government to list all the 85 exempted items before the 2015 budget. This list must be made public," he added.

The NGO said the implementation of GST will set off a chain reaction that will cause "uncontrollable price hikes".

"Malaysia's version of GST looks to have a hidden agenda behind it, unlike western countries where GST was implemented transparently with great returns for the governments," Eddy said.

"For example, the government said that there will no GST for tolls but every top up of the Touch n Go cards is charged with GST. At the same time, the government is slowly installing toll booths with no cash counters that is fully electronic," he added.

Eddy said that many details of the GST remain scarce and the people are yet to be fully informed about it.
