A police report has been lodged against constitutional expert Abdul Aziz Bari over a news report titled 'Only God, and not sultan, has absolute power'.

The article, which was published in The Malaysian Insider on Sept 9, quoted Aziz as telling a forum that the sultan has no power to demand more nominees.

He said the 30 statutory declarations in support of PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail (left) should be enough for the sultan to consent to her appointment as the menteri besar.

The report was lodged by Naning clansmen from Malacca and Negri Sembilan at the Alor Gajah district police headquarters, reported The Star Online today.

A total of five reports were lodged mainly against the former Universiti Islam Antarabangsa law professor, who was quoted in another article as saying that Wan Azizah should be appointed Selangor menteri besar.

He reportedly said that this is as the sultan is bound by the 1992 declaration, he was quoted as saying.

The Star Online did not specify the article, but Aziz has made this statement in more than one news article during the Selangor menteri besar crisis.

The constitutional expert said the 1992 Declaration of Constitutional Principles, signed by six sultans, states that rulers will follow government advice.

"We feel the articles are an insult to the royal institution as they have blatantly questioned the authority of the sultan in selecting and appointing a menteri besar when it is very clear in the Selangor constitution that a candidate for the post must be appointed with the consent of the sultan," said the groups’ representative Jamil Sidi.

Another Naning leader, Abdul Latif Hashim, claimed the statements are seditious.
