The followers of Christianity in Belaga have complained of attempts by a group of outsiders to convert them to Islam by offering RM6,000 to each person, lawyer Abun Sui Anyit said.

The group has visited several longhouses in Belaga and their next visit will include Punan Bah, Punan Biau, Uma Tanjung and Nanga Merit.

Abun ( left ) said the visit is organised under the 'goodwill and welfare' programme.

"What is shocking is that the group is offering RM6,000 to anybody who is willing to be converted to Islam.

"What is worrying us is that the majority of the longhouse dwellers are poor Christians who are easily influenced and hoodwinked by the offer of money," said Abun yesterday.

He said that the activities of the group and their movement have gone viral on Facebook and WhatsApp and the authorities therefore cannot simply deny their activities.

The authorities should investigate their activities immediately, Abun said.

"As one of the observers from the area, I am greatly perturbed about the activities of this group. The group's activities are not healthy," he added.

He hoped that Christians would not fall prey to the sweet talk and the offer of money by the group.

Abun said the government and the Welfare Department should help the poor villagers and longhouse dwellers meet their needs and well-being, rather than using this group of outsiders  to do the job as these outsiders have their own ulterior motives.
