The scheduled hearing of Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president's Abdullah Zaik's sedition trial has been postponed after his lawyer asks that the court should await for Universiti Malaya's associate professor Azmi Sharom's constitutional challenge.

 
The Kajang Sessions Court judge ‎Nor Hazani Hamzah, allowed lawyer Salim Bashir's request for a postponement and fixed Dec 22 as a mention date while waiting the decision on Azmi's challenge .

Abdullah's trial was initially scheduled for three days beginning today. 

 
DPP Mohd Abazafree Mohd Abbas did not object to the postponement.
 
Azmi is challenging the draconian Sedition Act 1948 law following it not being passed by parliament. 
 
His case is fixed for mention today at the Kuala Lumpur High Court, where it has fixed for Nov 5 and 6 for hearing.
 
Outside the 10 storey court complex, where about 100  Isma supporters gathered, A bdullah said he will continue to defend Islam till his death.

Bearing posters with slogans such as 'Jangan lupakan sejarah Malaysia' (Do not forget Malaysia's history), 'We are all Abdullah Zaik', 'Ketuanan Islam (Islamic superiority)' and 'Respect Malaysia's constitution', the supporters gathered outside under the watchful eyes of the police.

 
They dispersed peacefully at about 10am.
 
Abdullah was charged under Section 4(1) (b) of the Sedition Act 1948, and an alternative charge under the same Act, for labelling the Chinese as intruders, in an article titled 'Kedatangan pendatang China bersama penjajah British satu bentuk pencerobohan' (The arrival of Chinese immigrants together with the British is a form of intrusion).
 
If found guilty, Abdullah stands to face a maximum fine of RM5,000 or three years' jai or both.
 
Previously, it was reported last month that Isma produced a video urging its supporters to come out in number today in support of Abdullah.
