Universiti Malaya has slapped rebel student leader Fahmi Zainol with nine charges for organising and participating in a rally featuring opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

 

In a letter dated today, Fahmi has been told to attend a disciplinary hearing at the university on Nov 7.

 

The Persatuan Mahasiswa Universiti Malaya (PMUM) president told Malaysiakini that eight other students alleged to be involved in organising the rally have also received similar letters, although he alone is facing nine charges.

 

The charges against Fahmi are:

1. Organising a gathering of more than five persons without the approval of the vice-chancellor.

2. Holding a gathering of more than five persons without the approval of the vice-chancellor.

3. Attending a rally on campus that is not sanctioned by the university.

4. Having conduct on campus that is “damaging or prejudicial to the interests, peace, and reputation of the university”.

5. Having conduct on campus that is “damaging or prejudicial to public security and harmony, morality, civility or conduct”.

6. Causing actions on campus that may cause inconvenience or damages to any person on campus.

7. Having possession of, and using, a megaphone or similar devices without approval of the vice-chancellor.

8. Failing to abide by orders given by university staff or officers during the rally.

9. Failing to respond to a show-cause letter dated Oct 23, 2014.

 

The letter, sighted by Malaysiakini , was e-mailed to him at about 7pm today. It was signed by the student disciplinary committee chairperson Zanariah Abdullah.

 

Gathering on campus

The rally on Oct 27 drew some 2,000 students and activists, who stormed through the university gates into the campus where Anwar gave a speech.

The university yesterday said nine students have been identified as suspects who had participated in the gathering at the Dewan Tunku Canselor.

UM's media and corporate unit head Izzad Zalman Abd Kader said the actual number of students involved was still being investigated.

He added that CCTV recordings had been sent to other institutions for identification purposes.

"For students from UM, we will carry out an internal investigation," he was quoted in Bernama .

The news agency also reported Brickfields police chief Muhammad Azlee Abdullah as saying the police were in the process of identifying those involved in the illegal rally by viewing CCTV recordings on that day.
