What is Umno’s aim - build bridges or walls?

YOURSAY ‘Why this sudden concern for non-Malays at the annual assembly?’

Don't give foes 'racist' bullets, Umno told

Vijay47: I suppose on a dreary Monday afternoon, a rainy one at that, some humour will do wonders to lift our sagging spirits. And for variety in its repertoire, Umno has come through - a surprising change from its usual bullying and threatening ways.

So in his call for moderation, Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor would want Umno delegates not to stoke racism to hurt "our friends" at the party's general assembly this week.

Now who could such “friends” be? I don't recall Umno and its supporters being particularly pleasant, understanding, or considerate to "our friends" of the non-Malay or non-Muslim communities.

On the contrary, it was open season on them and Umno fanatics could say almost anything they wanted on a daily basis without fear of retribution.

Why this sudden concern for non-Malays when not a single Umno leader has spoken out against the extremism displayed by Perkasa, Isma, and that other befuddled lost soul, Ridhuan Tee Abdullah?

But the best is "the concept of power sharing in BN". MIC president G Palanivel must be most impressed with such hidden truths.

Doc: Indeed, so far Umno is doing a fantastic job of loading their machine guns with multiple rounds of racist bullets and repeatedly shooting itself in the head.

I don't think the opposition can do any better in shooting Umno with racist bullets than how Umno is doing to itself.

Odysseus: Adnan, you don’t only stop during your assembly. You need to show that Umno is a moderate party like what the PM has been telling the world.

Besides managing the voices within Umno, you need to manage your agents like Isma, Perkasa and the other NGOs too. Otherwise, your efforts will just go down the drain.

Bamboo: It’s too late to stop racism from Umno. Umno's racist sub-contractor Perkasa has shot enough racist bullets for the Malaysian public to see.

What's the difference with a few Umno delegates spewing racist speeches in the Umno general assembly? Umno's racist brand is deeply established already.

Old Timer: What Adnan is saying is this: "Don’t talk about race and religion when the whole world is watching. Talk about it in other forums. We can also get Ibrahim Ali and others to do the dirty job for us."

Continue-The-March: When Umno Baru won big in 2004 GE, it went to their head with Kerismuddin (Hishammuddin Hussein) banishing the crooked keris, to bay for the blood of anyone who dared to question ‘ketuanan Melayu’.

This was telecast ‘live’ to all homes. This was an episode no peace-loving Malaysian will ever forget.

Ksn: Your boss, the Umno Baru president, has explained moderation in Umno Baru must be based on Islamic requirements. How does that sound, Ku Nan, in a country with more than 45 percent of the population being non-Muslims?

So much for moderation from you and Umno Baru. Go and market your version of moderation in another planet, dear minister.

Negarawan: We would like to hear and see how Umno can sincerely build bridges, not walls, among the different ethnic and religious groups for the sake of the future of Malaysia.

RKR: I thought all this while, Umno advised its delegates not to make racist statements because it wanted to preserve unity.

Now it’s clear that this advice is to block the opposition from revealing Umno's true colours. This shows Ku Nan's sincerity on preserving unity.

The Mask: "Umno has never behaved in a dominant manner because the practice in BN is for all parties to have a role, where there is consensus, and decisions are made through consultations between all 13 component parties.”

Well MCA, MIC and Gerakan, this is the chance to show your mettle to say what you mean and mean what you say. Tengku Adnan has given you the permission.

Anon111: Yes, Umno is non-racist, non-religious party. Umno cares for the poor and homeless regardless of race. Umno is inclusive and practises fairness for all races. Umno is tolerant of all other religions and embraces and celebrates the diversity of our country.

Umno will defend the rights of minorities and their right to their faith and their right to learn their mother tongue as guaranteed by the constitution.

Umno is keenly aware of women’s rights and actively promotes it. Above all, Umno is clean, honest and is strongly against corruption, as evidenced by Umno's record in the past 57 years.

Malaysians have been unfair to Umno and have the wrong perception that Umno is corrupt. Come on, Malaysians, be fair to us.

If we were to compare to Mother Teresa, in terms of honesty, integrity, kindness, and our selflessness and willingness to help others, we would win by a clear margin.

The Analyser: They're delusionally insecure. Deluded if they still think they have an untarnished name. Insecure to be worrying about such petty matters, meanwhile ignoring real issues.

MinahBulat: Ku Nan, at all Umno general assemblies you noticed that DAP and PKR are all smiles. Your Umno boys have been hammering the Chinese and the Christians. As a matter of fact, your sub-contractor Isma and Perkasa have already started it.

This Umno general assembly will be no different, go on, wallop the Chinese schools, and make sure you to threaten to close them. The opposition will love you.

Abasir: "Don't give foes 'racist' bullets, Umno told". Translation: Don't bring up 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Berhad) scandal.

Siang Malam: You don't expect Umno delegates to discuss "Impact of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) pact on the Malaysian competitiveness in the primary sector," do you, Tengku Adnan?

Disgusted: If there’s no talk about racism, defending the Malay race and Islam, what else can they talk on? Rising costs of everything due to corruption and wastage and cronyism?

The perceived threats to Malays, Islam and royalty are always on the main agenda of Umno meetings to deflect all their weaknesses.

Wira: Unless Umno stops outsourcing its bigotry to Ibrahim Ali and his gang, it can never exonerate itself.
