Water at the Kenering dam, 30 kilometres from Kuala Kangsar hit its highest level in a decade, prompting authorities to release the water to avoid overflowing.

Gerik district deputy police chief Jamalani Mohd Isa said water has been released in stages since Dec 22.

"This has not happened for 10 years," he said when contacted.

Water from the dam will be released until dam operator Tenaga Nasional Bhd deems water levels to be safe.

He cannot confirm evacuations, but Malaysiakini understands that Gerik folk were warned of possible flooding due to heavy rains during the dam release.

TNB is releasing water from four dams, Bernama reported.

They are Bersia, Kenering and Chenderoh on Sungai Perak and the Kenyir dam on Sungai Kenyir, Terengganu.

More 100 families consisting of 435 people from the Hulu Perak and Kuala Kangsar district have been evacuated, the National Security Council (MKN) told Utusan Malaysia .

About 60,000 people have been evacuated in east coast states as floods worsen.

Flood victims are gradually increasing as flood waters are on the rise in each state listed.

Kelantan

  • The number of victims has increased to 26,137 people
  • The victims from 7, 468 families have been evacuated to 117 relief centres.
  • The worst affected district is Gua Musang.
  • Even with such a vast number, the state has yet to declare an emergency, saying that the floods are under control as the state can still be reached by road via Terengganu and by air, said Kelantan police chief Mazlan Lazim to Bernama.
Terengganu

  • The number of victims has increased to 22, 326 at noon today.
  • Kemaman, according to the National Security Council portal, was reported to have the highest number of flood victims at 13,039.- The victims are currently staying in 116 relief centres.
  • Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, speaking to Malaysiakini , said that while his parents’ house in Kemaman is still untouched, his sister's house had been cordoned off and no one has been able to leave the place for two days now.
  • Bernama also reported that a husband and wife are feared to have drowned when their rescue boat capsized in that district.
Pahang

  • The flood situation worsened with a total of 12,832 people evacuated.
  • Kuantan is confirmed to have recorded the highest number of evacuees, totaling 6,231 people from 1,689 families at 31 relief centres.
Perak

  • Evacuees remain at 1,030 people at 17 evacuation centres.
  • However, water at the Kenering dam in Perak hit its highest level in a decade, which led to authorities releasing water to avoid overflowing.

Perlis

  • All roads in the villages were now open to all vehicles.
